Tokyo 2020 golf venue votes in favour of admitting female members
The Kasumigaseki Country Club has changed its all-male policy after it risked losing its hosting rights for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The venue for the 2020 Olympic Games golf competition in Tokyo has voted in favour of admitting female members.
The Kasumigaseki Country Club risked having its hosting rights for the event stripped due to a controversial all-male policy, while women were also not permitted to play at the course on Sundays.
However, the club has changed its rules following a vote from the executive board, a decision welcomed by the president of the Tokyo 2020 organising committee Yoshiro Mori.
"We are pleased to learn that the Kasumigaseki Country Club voted to amend the club's membership policy in keeping with the spirit of the Olympic Charter," Mori said via a statement.
"On behalf of the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee, I'd like to extend my gratitude to the members of the club for their understanding and cooperation.
"I also would like to express my admiration for the club's endeavour to come to an agreement in such a short period of time."
