Wehrlein wary of 'annoying' Mercedes over Rosberg vacancy
After impressing in his debut season with Manor, Pascal Wehrlein has his eye on filling a Nico Rosberg-shaped hole at Mercedes.
Pascal Wehrlein has outlined his desire to fill the seat vacated by world champion Nico Rosberg at Mercedes, but insists he does not want become "annoying" by pestering the team.
Rosberg stunned the sporting world when he announced his F1 retirement on Friday, having wrapped up his maiden drivers' title with a second-place finish at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix five days earlier.
Mercedes junior driver Wehrlein, who drove for Manor during the 2016 season, is one of the frontrunners to replace Rosberg, while Valtteri Bottas and Fernando Alonso are also among the names being linked.
But the 22-year-old German does not want to make his case too strongly.
"The team knows I would love to drive for them, the tests I did were great," Wehrlein told Autosport.
"I cannot call them every day to say 'what's happening?' I don't want to be annoying.
"I'm there if they think I'm the right person for the team.
"I will do whatever I have to do and whatever is necessary to deliver.
"I just have to wait now."
Wehrlein expects competition for the seat to be fierce and says team boss Toto Wolff is a man in demand at the moment.
"There is no news at the moment, but as expected every driver is calling him," he added.
"Everyone wants to grab this unbelievable opportunity to join the Mercedes team.
"I understand they want to go for the best option, that they want to have a bit more time, or the time they need to decide which one they think will be the best one for the team."
Wehrlein is currently without a confirmed drive for the 2017 season.
