League Cup Preview- Chelsea Vs Arsenal
Arsenal looking to get back to winning ways after being dumped out of the FA Cup
Chelsea will be looking to pile further misery onto Arsenal in the Carabao Cup, as they meet the Gunners for the second time in a week. Both sides are likely to field strong sides for the tie at Stamford Bridge as the match takes on extra significance with the chance to realistically lift silverware on the line. Both bosses rested key players for their FA cup round with vastly different results.
Antonio Conte elected to change nine players for the trip to Championship Norwich with Chelsea stuttering to a 0-0 draw at Carrow Road.
Whilst for Arsenal, Wenger elected to also make several changes to his side for the visit to Nottingham Forest. That gamble proved to be too far for the French coach as Forest inflicted a 4-2 defeat to the gunners, dumping Arsenal out of the third round for the first time since 1996.
Again, the pressure has ramped up on Arsene Wenger for his team selection and the resting of key players for the game. The likes of Mesut Özil, Jack Wilshere and want-away winger Alexis Sánchez should play some part on Wednesday evening.
Francis Coquelin is unlikely to feature, with the French midfielder finalising a move away from the club. Whilst Alex Iwobi could be a doubt for the game after Wenger revealed that the player will be fined for staying out late on Saturday prior to the defeat to Nottingham Forest. Both Granit Xhaka and Shkodran Mustafi also look unlikely to feature after both pickikng up knocks
Wednesday evening could be an important game for summer signing Alexandre Lacazette. The French international is the sides leading scorer with eight goals, yet he has not found the back of the net since the start of December. A vital away goal at Chelsea would go some way in boosting the confidence of the former Lyon attacker.
Chelsea should have a fully fit side to choose from for the visit of Arsenal. Eden Hazard, Alvero Moratta and Cesc Fabregas should all feature for the Blues having not started against Norwich on Saturday evening. The only absentee for the blues will be new signing Ross Barkley, who is still recovering from a hamstring injury.
Conte will be hoping that his side can continue their twelve games undefeated streak at Stamford Bridge which stretches back to September 2017.
Chelsea showed that they have more than enough attacking talent to break down the Arsenal backline in their 2-2 draw with Arsenal just a week ago. Eden Hazard stood out in the game at the Emirates just five days ago and the Belgian winger will be hoping to be amongst the goals to aid his side in the first leg of the semi-final.
