Tamim enjoys England reunion on tight second day
England were made to work hard for wickets in Chittagong, as Bangladesh reached the close 72 behind with five first-innings wickets intact.
Bangladesh's Tamim Iqbal once again enjoyed success against England, who were grateful for late wickets in each session as the second day of the first Test in Chittagong ended with proceedings intriguingly poised.
In his four previous Test meetings with England, all in 2010, Tamim compiled two thrilling hundreds - at Lord's and Old Trafford - and also passed 50 on four occasions.
The opener top-scored on Friday with 78, while fellow experienced figures Mahmudullah (38), Mushfiqur Rahim (48) and Shakib Al Hasan (31 not out) also made valuable contributions as Bangladesh reached stumps on 221-5, having earlier dismissed their opponents for 293.
England made breakthroughs in the final overs before lunch and tea respectively, while Ben Stokes landed a potentially crucial blow as the close drew near, ousting home skipper Mushfiqur to claim the first wicket by a seam bowler in the match.
Shakib now appears key to his side's hopes of earning a first-innings lead, on a surface offering plenty of assistance to the spinners.
There was immediate success for Bangladesh on the second morning as Taijul Islam had Chris Woakes (36) caught at short-leg from the first ball of the day.
Adil Rashid overturned an lbw decision that had gone against him in the next over, before also falling to Taijul for 26. Mehedi Hasan then wrapped up the innings by having Stuart Broad caught behind, a wicket that ensured the 18-year-old debutant finished with 6-80 - the second-best figures on Test debut for Bangladesh.
With all 10 England wickets having fallen to spin, it was no great surprise to see Gareth Batty - in his first Test appearance for 11 years - share the new ball with Broad when the hosts began their reply.
Yet it was another off-spinner, Moeen Ali, who made a notable impact in the last over of the morning session, the all-rounder producing two excellent deliveries to bowl Imrul Kayes (21) and have Mominul Haque caught at gully for a duck.
Tamim and Mahmudullah rebuilt impressively in a third-wicket stand of 90, the former's only real scare coming in the penultimate over before tea when Joe Root took a wonderful diving catch at slip off Moeen, only for a review to show the ball had brushed Tamim's arm rather than his glove.
England were still able to end another session on a high, Root holding on to a more straightforward chance in the next over when Rashid found Mahmudullah's outside edge.
Batty then had Tamim caught behind in the evening as the left-hander looked to play through the off side and wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow again held on, albeit less convincingly, to remove Mushfiqur late in the day after the Bangladesh captain had shared 58 with Shakib.
