Root the talisman as England take control of series
England were grateful to a familiar talisman as they took command of the ODI series with Pakistan at Lord's.
Joe Root produced another wonderful performance to score 89 as England eased into a 2-0 lead over Pakistan with a comfortable four-wicket win at Lord's.
Having won the first one-day international by 44 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis method, England delivered another impressive showing with bat and ball on Saturday to take command of the five-match series.
Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat but promptly lost three wickets in the first four overs and, though Sarfraz Ahmed (105) aided the recovery with his second 50-over ton, the tourists were bowled out for 251.
In response, England lost Jason Roy for a duck with just the second delivery of the innings and Alex Hales (14) also went cheaply.
But the target of 252 always looked in reach, the classy Root receiving plenty of support as Eoin Morgan's (68) 30th ODI half-century and Ben Stokes' 30-ball 42 helped provide the platform for England to triumph with 15 balls to spare.
Sami Aslam (1) was adjudged to have gloved Chris Woakes (3-42) behind on review and, after Mark Wood (3-46) flattened Sharjeel Khan's (0) off stump, Woakes struck again with a stunning delivery that drew an edge from Azhar Ali (0).
Sarfraz counter-attacked for a punchy 50, stringing together stands of 64 and 59 with Babar Azam (30) and Shoaib Malik (28), but it was his partnership of 77 with Imad Wasim (63 not out) that proved particularly tough for England to dislodge.
Right-hander Sarfraz brought up his century by nudging a Liam Plunkett delivery for four, but, after successfully reviewing an lbw decision, fell to Adil Rashid (1-51) in the next over.
Imad hit 15 runs in the 46th over to bring up his 50, but he found little in the way of assistance from the tail, which was accounted for by Woakes and Wood in relatively short order.
A strong performance from Imad (2-38) continued when he removed Hales after Roy edged Mohammad Amir (1-39) onto his stumps, but any hope Pakistan had of an England collapse was eroded by Root and Morgan.
Morgan did the heavier lifting in their stand of 112 before seeing an innings in which he hit nine fours ended by Imam.
Six boundaries and a maximum followed from the typically aggressive Stokes as England cantered towards victory, though they reached the target in somewhat disjointed fashion.
Jos Buttler (4) was run out and Root fell 11 runs short of a ton, mowing Wahab Riaz (1-46) to Shoaib Malik, but Woakes cut a shot to the point boundary to wrap things up.
