Ashwin stars as India brush aside West Indies
Returning second-innings figures of 7-83, Ravichandran Ashwin dazzled as India thrashed West Indies to go 1-0 up in the four-match series.
Ravichandran Ashwin led India to a simple victory in the first Test against West Indies, the tourists winning by an innings and 92 runs in North Sound.
India reached a daunting 566-8 batting first at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, before bowling out the Windies for 243 in their first innings and enforcing the follow-on, the hosts resuming 21-1 on Sunday, 302 runs away from making India bat again.
Ashwin scored a century during India's dominant performance with the bat and, having finished empty handed during West Indies' indifferent first innings, he responded by taking seven scalps during a decisive fourth day, the first time in his Test career the off-spinner has claimed five or more wickets outside Asia.
Darren Bravo (10) departed without adding to the Windies' score, well held by Ajinkya Rahane in the slip cordon off Umesh Yadav (1-34).
Marlon Samuels led what passed for the home team's resistance early in the day, notching 50 but losing two partners in quick succession.
Surviving opener Rajendra Chandrika struggled his way to 31 from 108 deliveries before eventually falling victim to Ashwin (7-83), who drew an inside edge held on the third attempt by wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha.
Chandrika's dismissal brought a 67-run stand alongside Samuels for the third wicket to an end.
And Jermaine Blackwood followed him back to the pavilion just two overs later, Ashwin and Virat Kohli at short midwicket combining to see the right-hander record a pair in this Test.
Debutant Roston Chase could only muster eight before suffering the indignity of being caught by substitute fielder Lokesh Rahul, Ashwin again doing the damage with the ball.
And Shane Dowrich (9) fared little better, misjudging a googly to find himself trapped lbw by Amit Mishra (1-61).
Ashwin then tempted Jason Holder into an ill-advised attempted cover driver to bowl the skipper for 16.
West Indies' demise appeared imminent at that point, but an unexpected lower-order resistance frustrated the tourists, Carlos Brathwaite (51 not out) and Devendra Bishoo (45) putting on an innings-high 95 for the ninth wicket.
Brathwaite struck three fours and two sixes in a defiant knock to finish unbeaten, but the late rally only served to prolong the inevitable, Ashwin eventually removing Bishoo and then Shannon Gabriel (4) to earn his team a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.
