Leipzig set new Bundesliga record with six-match undefeated streak
RB Leipzig set a new Bundesliga record Friday by beating Augsburg 2-1 to become the first-ever promoted team to stay undefeated through their first six matches.
Leipzig's third victory in six rounds gives Ralph Hasenhuettl's team 12 points - even with Borussia Dortmund for third place on the table.
Leipzig had been even with Rot Weiss Oberhausen, who avoided defeat in their first five matches of the 1969-70 season as a promoted side.
"It's nice to see that we have had a good start in the league," Hasenhuettl said. "Beating Dortmund at home is definitely a highlight but we still have a lot to learn. We just want to go step by step."
Emil Forsberg's 11th-minute goal was equalised three minutes later by Augsburg's Ji Dong-Won before Yussuf Poulsen gave Leipzig the lead again in the 52nd minute.
"We didn't have a good first 20 minutes but we still took the lead, and then you give up the goal and you start from the beginning," the Leipzig coach added.
"But I'm proud that the team showed they were able to pick things up after the halftime and make it 2-1. We had some chances for a third goal and should have done it."
Augsburg were victorious in just one of their last four games and remained on seven points, currently in 11th place.
The hosts jumped ahead after 11 minutes as Augsburg keeper Marwin Hitz stopped Marcel Sabitzer's shot, but Forsberg ran onto the loose ball and hammered it home.
The lead did not last long as the South Korean Ji knotted the game with a beautiful left foot strike from the right side into the far upper corner in the 14th minute.
Leipzig nearly went up again 11 minutes later but Timo Werner's header went off the crossbar and Jeffrey Gouweleeuw cleared the ball at the line.
Leipzig's other Scandinavian Poulsen from Denmark got the job done seven minutes after the restart, collecting a ball from Sabitzer and then blasting home from the left side for his first Bundesliga goal.
Werner had another golden chance at the hour mark but his shot after a long counter attack run was off-target. Both teams had chances in the final two minutes but Poulsen's goal ended the scoring.
