Basketball: Reigning Olympic women's champs USA name finalists
Three-time Olympic champions Tamika Catchings, Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi are among 16 finalists named Thursday for the US Olympic women's basketball training camp scheduled for February 21-23.
The session at the University of Connecticut is expected to be the last gathering of players before the roster is trimmed to the 12-player lineup that will try and bring the Americans a sixth consecutive gold medal in August at Rio.
"This three-day training camp becomes a vital part in our preparations," said US and Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma, who has a 23-0 record at the 2012 Olympics and 2010 and 2014 worlds.
"This is a good opportunity to train and help us prepare for Rio. It gives us a chance to take a look at some of the returning players and continue to look at positions for the future. It gives the committee an opportunity to see where everyone is physically and how they fit in."
US women have gone 81-1 in Olympic and world championship competition since the start of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics with four world and five Games crowns.
Their only loss in the span was to Russia in a 2006 worlds semi-final.
Other Women's NBA (WNBA) standouts among the 16 Olympic hopefuls include two-time Olympic champion Seimone Augustus and 2012 Olympic gold medalists Angel McCoughtry, Maya Moore and Lindsay Whalen.
The group also includes 2014 world championship team members Brittney Griner, Breanna Stewart and Nnemkadi Ogwumike.
WNBA 2015 Most Valuable Player Elena Delle Donne, Rookie of the Year Jewell Loyd and season assists leader Courtney Vandersloot are also candidates, as well as Stefanie Dolson, Kayla McBride and Danielle Robinson.
