Mariota suffers broken leg in Titans loss
The Tennessee Titans lost 38-17 on Saturday and the defeat was compounded by a season-ending knee injury to Marcus Mariota.
Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered a fractured fibula against the Jacksonville Jaguars and will miss the remainder of the NFL season.
The Titans lost 38-17 on Saturday and the defeat was compounded by a season-ending knee injury to Mariota, which was confirmed by head coach Mike Mularkey post-game.
In the final minute of the third quarter, Mariota was chased down from behind and tackled around his ankles by Jaguars pass rusher Sheldon Day.
Mariota was unable to stand under his own power while team medical staff tended to him. An air cast was placed around the 23-year-old's right ankle and he was loaded onto a cart.
"We'll know more how to handle that when he gets back and sees a doctor," Mularkey said. "You don’t want to lose Marcus. He means a lot to this football team. He is so well respected and loved by his teammates.
"It is hard [on him]. It is hard. If you saw him, he knew he was hurt on the field when he was punching the ground like he was. He is such a competitor. He doesn't like not playing with his team-mates, so he took it hard."
Mariota was eight-of-20 passing for 99 yards with a touchdown when he was injured.
Tennessee fell to 8-7 and they are on the outside looking in for an AFC playoff spot.
