Lopetegui sacked as Spain coach
Julen Lopetegui has been sacked as Spain coach just 48 hours before his side are to play Portugal in their opening World Cup game. After it was announced yesterday that Lopetegu was to take charge of Real Madrid after the World Cup.
Lopetegui has signed a three year deal with Los Blancos, however, it was deemed inappropriate that the announcement was made just a few days before Spain's opening game of the competition.
RFEF president Luis Rubiales revealed that he was pushed into the decision after the news broke that Lopetegui would be leaving after the World Cup.
"I'm sure this will, in time, make us stronger. I admire Julen very much, I respect him very much. He seems like a top trainer and that makes it harder to make the decision."
"You can't do things this way, two or three days before the World Cup. We have been compelled to make this decision."
Spain will now look to quickly announce a replacement to lead the side heading into the Portugal game in Sochi.
