Can Vatreni go all the way and lift a maiden World Cup?
With the World Cup now heading to the final four, we assess the chances of the sides left in the tournament to see who can go all the way and lift the famous trophy in Moscow on Sunday the 15th of July. As ever, you can watch all the action from the World Cup via beIN SPORTS CONNECT.
Can go one step further than the heroes of 1998 and lift the World Cup? The current crop of Croatian stars have sparkled in Russia and are now just two games away from immortality. It hasn’t been all plain sailing for the European side, having gone all the way to penalties in the round of sixteen against Denmark, and then again against hosts Russia. However, two shoot-out wins will boost the confidence of Vatreni who will be convinced of progressing should it go all the way again.
Central to their success has been Monaco keeper Danijel Subašić, who came up with a number of crucial penalty saves including three against Denmark to book his nation a place in the quarter-finals. Even more impressive was how the 33-year old played through the pain barrier against Russia after injuring his hamstring, eventually saving Fedor Smolov's spot-kick. Croatia is currently the fourth favourites to lift the World Cup.
After putting Argentina to the sword with an impressive 3-0 group stage win, Croatia has been widely lauded as the best footballing side left in the tournament. This has come in part from Zlatko Dalić the 51-year old cut his teeth in Middle Eastern football, before getting the call to manage his side for their World Cup playoff games against Greece. Dalić successfully navigated the playoffs and has grown with his side during the tournament. Having called this tournament, “his best moment in management” the former Al Ain boss is on the cusp of winning the biggest prize in World football.
Key Man
Luka Modrić has been the fulcrum of this dazzling Croatian side and has led by example as captain of the team. The Real Madrid man has been masterful with the ball at his feet and has earned plenty of plaudits for his play, including from former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes. The 32-year old sets the tempo for his team in midfield, and has also come up with some crucial penalty shoot-out goals on route to the semi-final. For Modrić, this could very well be his last World Cup, and he would certainly like to add to his already vast haul of trophies with the World Cup.
