Unionistas-Barcelona and Atlético-Real Madrid Set for Copa del Rey Round of 16
Unionistas de Salamanca-Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid-Real Madrid are two of the pairings for the Round of 16 in the Copa del Rey, as determined by the draw held this Monday at the Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas.
Unionistas, from Primera RFEF, is proving to be the greatrevelation of the tournament and has reached the Round of 16 after eliminating Gernika, Sporting de Gijón, and Villarreal. Now, at the Reina Sofía stadium, they will host Barcelona, the most decorated team in the competition with 31 titles, who advanced to the Round of 16 after overcoming Barbastro from Segunda RFEF with more difficulty than expected.
A week after facing each other in the semifinals of the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia, Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid will meet again, in a single-leg match, at the Wanda Metropolitano in the Round of 16 of the Copa del Rey.
This derby will be the eighth time it occurs in the Copa del Rey Round of 16. Atlético won four times, and Real Madrid three. The most recent was in 2015, with a 2-0 victory for the rojiblanco team at the Vicente Calderón
and a 2-2 draw at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Last season they also faced each other in the Copa del Rey, but in the quarterfinals. The victory, in a single-leg match, went to Real Madrid, who won 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu with goals from Karim Benzema, Rodrygo
Goes, and Vinicius Júnior.
Tenerife, the only Segunda team in the Round of 16, eliminated UD Las Palmas in the Round of 32 in a highly competitive Canarian derby. Their new opponent is Mallorca, another island team, eager to advance in the
competition.
Getafe, after eliminating Espanyol in the Round of 32, will debut in their stadium in this edition of the Copa against Sevilla, who hopes to forget their league woes in the competition. It will be the third time they face each other in the Copa. The previous two were in the 2007 final and the semifinals in 2010, both with favorable results for the Seville team.
After winning the Basque derby against Eibar in the Round of 32, Athletic Club de Bilbao will play another derby, this time against Alavés, who eliminated Betis in the previous round. It will be at San Mamés, with fans dedicated to the Copa, a competition that the Bilbao team has won 23 times.
Intense rivalry will also be experienced at El Sadar between Osasuna and Real Sociedad, two geographically close teams that last faced each other in the Copa del Rey in the Round of 16 in the 2019/2020 season. On that occasion, Real Sociedad won 3-1. Before that, they faced each other seven times with a balance of six victories for Real and only one for the Navarre team.
At Mestalla, Valencia, and Celta de Vigo will seek to advance to the quarterfinals, a duel that last occurred in the Copa in the 2016/2017 season, with a victory for the Galician team with a total of 6-2.
The last Round of 16 matchup will be between Girona and Rayo Vallecano at Montilivi. The match will be special for the coach of the Girona team, Miguel Ángel Sánchez Muñoz, 'Míchel', who will once again face the club from his neighborhood, where he played for much of his professional career and where he began his journey as a coach.
