The Leinster centre missed his country's opening Six Nations victories over France and Italy with an ankle injury, having sat out the first five months of the season after shoulder surgery.

Ringrose will be a welcome option for Schmidt, who lost the influential Robbie Henshaw to a shoulder problem, but Munster centre Chris Farrell is likely to start against Wales in Dublin on Saturday.

Hooker Niall Scannell and scrum-half John Cooney will also train with Schmidt's contingent to cover for injuries to Rob Herring (elbow) and Luke McGrath (knee).

An Ireland Rugby statement said: "Tadhg Furlong, Iain Henderson and James Ryan are progressing well through their respective rehab programmes."
