Rooney scores in Ibrahimovic's absence
A 2-0 win at Burnley on Sunday saw Manchester United move a point behind rival Manchester City in the Premier League table.
Wayne Rooney scored on his return to the Manchester United team in a straightforward 2-0 win at Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday.
The skipper's first appearance since 4 March came in place of the injured Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is set to miss the rest of the season with a knee ligament injury, as United won comfortably to extend its unbeaten run to 23 league matches.
Anthony Martial gave United the lead with his 25th United goal, completing a terrific counter-attack with a cool finish after swapping passes with Ander Herrera.
United's advantage was doubled by Rooney before the interval, the club's record goalscorer on hand to turn home a loose ball after Tom Heaton could only parry Martial's effort.
Burnley rarely looked likely to make a comeback and United was able to conserve energy in the second half after its exertions against Anderlecht in the UEFA Europa League, although it may have another injury concern to contend with after Paul Pogba limped off late in the match.
United moved a single point behind rival Manchester City in the race for UEFA Champions League qualification ahead of Friday's (AEST) pivotal derby clash at Etihad Stadium, while Burnley has won only one of its past 11 league matches and remains 15th, five points above the relegation zone.
