Madrid ends winless run in style
Real Betis offered little resistance as Real Madrid hammered it 6-1 in LaLiga on Sunday (AEST), with the visitors ending their winless run.
Real Madrid ended a run of four matches without a win in sensational fashion on Sunday (AEST) as it obliterated Real Betis 6-1 in LaLiga to make a mockery of its supposed injury crisis.
Zinedine Zidane was without a number of first-team regulars, including Luka Modric, Casemiro and Sergio Ramos, but his side put on a show in Seville and raced into a 4-0 lead before half-time on its way to a first victory in all competitions since 19 September (AEST).
Toni Kroos was instrumental in crafting the first two, teeing up Raphael Varane early on and then Karim Benzema as Madrid took charge.
Marcelo effectively ended the match as a contest with his controversial third, finding the net despite appearing to be just offside, before Isco finished a scintillating counter-attack on the stroke of half-time.
Betis improved immeasurably after the break and found the net early on through Alvaro Cejudo, but Isco's delightful second after 62 minutes killed off any hope of a miraculous comeback with the 100th goal of Zidane's reign.
Madrid continued its search for goals and Ronaldo finally got in on the act 12 minutes from time, wrapping up a comprehensive victory and sending Madrid into Wednesday's (AEST) UEFA Champions League clash with Legia Warsaw in fine fettle by pulling level with LaLiga leader and cross-town rival Atletico Madrid.
Madrid's injury worries looked to be a distant thought when it got off to a brilliant start, as Varane turned in Kroos's free-kick with a good header in only the fourth minute.
Both Ronaldo and Gareth Bale missed glorious chances for a second, but it did eventually arrive just after the half-hour mark.
Kroos robbed Joaquin in midfield, leaving Betis outnumbered at the back and the German coolly fed Benzema, who beat Antonio Adan at his near post.
Madrid seemingly wrapped things up six minutes before the break, the brilliant Marcelo scuffing a finish into the ground that fortuitously looped over Adan after Benzema's initial effort deflected into the Brazilian's path.
Betis's attempts to salvage something left it completely open again just before the break.
Pepe broke away from the Madrid area to begin a counter-attack and the centre-back eventually latched on to Ronaldo's low cross at the other end to coolly square for Isco, who rounded off a breathtaking move with a simple tap-in.
Betis looked a resurgent force at the start of the second period and deservedly pulled one back in the 55th minute.
Jonas Martin pounced on Pepe's poor pass out from the back and found Joaquin, who brilliantly flicked the ball into the path of half-time substitute Cejudo and he produced a composed finish to beat Keylor Navas.
Any momentum gained from that was quickly halted by the visitors, though, as a Ronaldo cross fell to Isco and the midfielder curled a fine effort into the top-right corner.
Ronaldo finally got on the scoresheet himself after seeing several previous efforts go to waste, racing on to Alvaro Morata's throughball and prodding the ball beyond Adan to secure a crushing win that helps Madrid keep pace with Atletico, Barcelona and Sevilla, all of whom also won on the matchday.
