Barcelona was near its best in a 3-0 Camp Nou dismantling of fourth-placed Sevilla, Lionel Messi netting a brace and Louis Suarez producing an audacious overhead volley to keep the pressure firmly on Madrid.
Madrid had a slightly tougher time of it away at Leganes, going 3-0 up, before enduring a nervy second half as the home team rallied to 3-2. Alvaro Morata's header to bring up a hat-trick of goals settled the result to preserve Zinedine Zidane's team's two-point buffer.
Barca then endured a major slip-up with a 2-1 loss to Malaga:
Real Madrid was held to a tense 1-1 home draw by city rival, Atletico, Barca's slip-up at Malaga allowing Zinedine Zidane's team to edge one point further ahead at the top.
Barcelona got back on track, albeit via a tense 3-2 win over plucky Real Sociedad at Camp Nou:
While Madrid survived a tricky road trip, prevailing 3-2 at Sporting Gijon.
