Rodgers confirms Liverpool to rest Sturridge against Sion
The Reds boss indicated that the England striker will not play against the Swiss side, and called on the Premier League to do more for its teams in Europe.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed striker Daniel Sturridge will be rested for his side's Europa League clash with Sion.
Sturridge, who has recently returned from injury, scored twice as he made his return to the starting lineup in the 3-2 win over Aston Villa but will not feature against the Swiss side.
"He won't be involved in the game," the Liverpool manager told reporters ahead of the Group B match. "We'll keep him fresh for the weekend. He's still building his way towards fitness."
Rodgers also indicated there would be more changes from the team that started against Villa, hinting that the likes of Jordan Rossiter, Cameron Brannagan and Pedro Chirivella - who all got minutes in the previous Europa League clash against Bordeaux - will be afforded some playing time.
"Our approach to this game will be how it's been in the competition so far: it's an opportunity for players on the fringes," he said.
After a number of disappointing results for English sides in Europe, illustrated with Arsenal's UEFA Champions League defeat to Olympiacos and Chelsea's loss to Porto, the Liverpool boss called on the Premier League to do more to support clubs throughout their continental challenges.
"The Premier League can do more to support English teams in Europe," Rodger said. "It happens with other federations. The physicality of the Premier League is like no other."
