Rangers cuts Barton loose by mutual consent
After a club-sanctioned suspension and string of off-field controversy, Rangers has agreed to terminate Joey Barton's contract by mutual consent.
The 34-year-old, signed a two-year contract in May, but his time in Glasgow has been cut short after agreeing a severance package, which is expected to be announced on Thursday (AEDT).
The midfielder has not played since early September, when he was suspended for a heated row with team-mate Andy Halliday about Rangers' 5-1 defeat to Old Firm rival Celtic on 10 September.
Barton returned to training on Friday and has since been told by the club to train with the Youth team while 'special arrangements' are made for his exit.
Since joining Rangers in May, Barton's time in Scotland was plagued with controversy, the former Manchester CIty midfielder was charged with breaching betting rules in October after placing 44 bets on football matches over a three-month period.
