Gerrard nets screamer in Legends win
Steven Gerrard scored a sublime goal and rattled the crossbar from distance in a performance of old as Liverpool Legends beat Real Madrid Legends at Anfield.
Former captain Steven Gerrard scored a characteristically spectacular goal for Liverpool Legends as they beat Real Madrid Legends 4-3 in a showpiece game at Anfield.
With the already Reds up 3-0 in a one-sided affair, Gerrard deftly collected a ball into the box in the 78th minute, teeing it up on his right foot before smashing a volley into the bottom corner to the delight of the Kop behind the goal.
Barely 10 minutes earlier, Gerrard smashed a long-range drive against the crossbar, taking the crowd up on its urges for him to shoot every time he touched the ball.
Gerrard was the provider for two of Liverpool Legends' other goals, crossing for Michael Owen to head home the opener after 23 minutes, and also providing a ball into the six-yard box to allow John Aldridge the simplest of tap-ins to make it 2-0.
The third came from the penalty spot, Robbie Fowler stepping up the score from the spot after being hilariously booed by the home fans desperate for a Gerrard goal. Fowler had also hit the frame of the goal just prior to netting the third.
Gerrard finally provided the Anfield faithful with what it wanted with his dextrous finish, before Real Madrid Legends started to fight back with three goals in the final 10 minutes.
But it would not be enough as Ian Rush's team held on to win, Gerrard not surprisingly claiming the man of the match award.
