Bayern sacks Ancelotti after defeat at PSG
Carlo Ancelotti has been fired by Bayern Munich in the wake of its humbling defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League.
Carlo Ancelotti has been sacked as head coach of Bayern Munich after an underwhelming start to the season that culminated in a 3-0 UEFA Champions League thrashing at Paris Saint-Germain.
Ancelotti had won the Bundesliga title in his first campaign in Germany, but results and performances have tailed off, amid reports former club AC Milan is interested in the Italian, and the Bayern board acted swiftly.
Bayern is third in the Bundesliga and second in its UEFA Champions League group, with dismal defeats to Hoffenheim and PSG exacerbated by further poor displays and apparent problems behind the scenes.
Ancelotti's assistant and former Bayern defender Willy Sagnol will take charge in the interim, although Hoffenheim coach Julian Nagelsmann has been long touted as a target by Bayern Munich chiefs.
Specifically drafted in to win the UEFA Champions League trophy that predecessor Pep Guardiola could not manage in Germany, Ancelotti could only guide Bayern to last season's quarter-finals before a thrashing at Parc des Princes "showed that we had to take action", in the words of Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
Falling three points off the pace of Bundesliga leader Borussia Dortmund, led by newcomer Peter Bosz, also left Ancelotti in a precarious predicament.
