French Open champion Andreeva suffers early Wimbledon exit
Mirra Andreeva clinched her first grand slam title at Roland-Garros last month, but the youngster crashed out of Wimbledon on Wednesday.
Barbora Krejcikova channelled the form she showed in her run to the Wimbledon title two years ago as she stunned Mirra Andreeva.
Krejcikova claimed a surprise triumph at SW19 in 2024, but missed the Championships last year.
However, she got the better of another grand slam champion on Wednesday.
Andreeva, playing just her second match since winning the Roland-Garros title, went down 4-6 7-5 6-4 in a two-hour, 46-minute thriller on Centre Court.
Krejcikova and Andreeva had met once before in the second round at Wimbledon, with the latter progressing on that occasion as her Czech opponent retired hurt.
And the youngster seemed well set to continue her quest for back-to-back major crowns as she took the first set, but Krejcikova displayed immense powers of recovery to claw her way back.
Krejcikova had victory in hand when she led 5-3, 40-0 in the decider, yet Andreeva rallied. Seven deuces later, the Russian was back on serve, having saved six match points in total.
However, Krejcikova re-found her groove and, at the seventh time of asking, she got the job done to tee up a clash with compatriot Nikola Bartunkova.
Andreeva out, but other big names progress
Andreeva may be out, but Iva Jovic is another exciting youngster on the WTA Tour, and the American made it through to round three by beating 38-year-old Tatjana Maria.
Jessica Pegula also progressed, with the fourth seed overcoming Sara Sorribes 7-6 (8-6) 6-1.
Belinda Bencic, the 2020 Olympic champion, also booked her place in round three.
The day, however, belonged to Krejcikova, who said: "It's definitely special. I have been through a lot with injuries and in my personal life.
"The last couple of months have been really hard to get through, with the emotions of what has happened.
"But, I put lots of work and dedication in every single day. I try to go day by day."
