De Minaur falls short to Paul in Hamburg semi-finals
Alex De Minaur squandered a healthy lead in the semi-finals of the Hamburg Open, where Tommy Paul progressed to the showpiece.
Tommy Paul booked his spot in the Hamburg Open final after producing a brilliant comeback victory over Alex De Minaur.
The American came from behind to win 2-6 6-3 6-3 against third seed De Minaur in two hours and 17 minutes.
After saving two break points in the opening game of the match, De Minaur converted two of a possible four break points to clinch the first set.
The Australian carried his momentum into the second, racing into a 3-0 lead as Paul found himself in trouble in Germany.
However, the sixth seed reeled off six consecutive games, giving away just five points in his three service games to force a decider.
And there was no turning back from Paul, whose one converted break point was enough to seal victory, which he did with his third match point.
Paul will face Ignacio Buse in the Hamburg showpiece after he defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-1 6-4 in just 65 minutes.
Elsewhere in Geneva, Mariano Navone stunned sixth seed Casper Ruud 7-5 6-2 to reach the final.
On the other side of the draw, Learner Tien overcame Alexander Bublik in a tough battle, winning 6-1 4-6 7-6 (7-5).
Data Debrief: Paul regains momentum on clay
After winning in Houston last month, Paul lost some of his confidence on clay with early exits in Madrid and Rome.
However, he is now through to his second Tour final on clay, and 10th showpiece overall.
De Minaur put up a strong fight against Paul, saving 13 of the 17 break points he conceded, but it was not enough for the Australian, who will now prepare for the French Open next week.
