The question on everyone’s lips as Formula 1 heads to Baku this weekend: can McLaren clinch the constructors’ championship at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix?

Holding a commanding 337-point lead over second-placed Ferrari with eight rounds to go, the reigning champions could mathematically seal the title on September 21. To do so, McLaren need to be at least 346 points clear of Ferrari by the chequered flag in Baku.

That scenario will play out if:

• McLaren outscore Ferrari by nine points or more,
• They are not outscored by Mercedes by 12 points or more, and
• Red Bull do not outscore them by 33 points or more.

Meanwhile, it is worth noting that Baku has rarely seen repeat winners - the only exception being former Red Bull driver Sergio Perez, who triumphed in 2021 and 2023. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc holds the record for the most pole positions in Baku with four, although the Monegasque has never managed to convert any of them into victory.
