Nagelsmann hands Woltemade and Bischof maiden Germany call-ups
With injuries causing a selection headache, Julian Nagelsmann has brought in two new faces to the Germany squad for the Nations League.
Julian Nagelsmann has handed Nick Woltemade and Tom Bischof their first Germany call-ups for their Nations League semi-final against Portugal next month.
Germany have injuries to contend with, as Kai Havertz, who has just returned from a hamstring problem, Antonio Rudiger, Jamal Musiala, Tim Kleindienst and Nico Schlotterbeck all miss out.
Woltemade scored 12 goals in 28 Bundesliga appearances for Stuttgart this season, the second-highest tally for the team after Ernedin Demirovic.
He also boasts the best shot conversion rate of any player in the squad to score more than once in the competition, at 24.5% (12/49).
"Nick [Woltemade] is a good option in attack, especially with the absence of Kleindienst. If we reach our top level, then we can beat Portugal," Nagelsmann said in a German FA interview.
"That is our goal. We will do everything possible to reach the final. We want to play the final in Munich."
Bischof, who will be joining Bayern Munich on a free transfer next season, created 50 chances for Hoffenheim in the German top-flight, the joint-most among the squad (level with Andrej Kramaric).
Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Serge Gnabry and Niclas Fullkrug are also back in the squad after long absences. Ter Stegen is returning after recovering from a serious knee injury he sustained in September, while Fullkrug is back for the first time since September.
Gnabry's last appearance for Germany came back in November, as he missed the Nations League quarter-final against Italy in March due to inconsistent performances.
Florian Wirtz, Waldemar Anton and Felix Nmecha are also back in the squad.
Germany face Portugal in Munich on June 4, with Spain and France contesting the other semi-final the following day.
The winners will compete in the final on June 8, also in Munich.
Germany squad in full: Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona), Oliver Baumann (Hoffenheim), Alexander Nubel (Stuttgart), Robert Andrich (Bayer Leverkusen), Waldemar Anton (Borussia Dortmund), Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich), Yann Bisseck (Inter), Robin Koch (Eintracht Frankfurt), Maximilian Mittelstadt (Stuttgart), David Raum (RB Leipzig), Jonathan Tah (free agent), Karim Adeyemi (Borussia Dortmund), Nadiem Amiri (Mainz), Tom Bischof (Hoffenheim), Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich), Leon Goretzka (Bayern Munich), Robin Gosens (Fiorentina), Pascal Gross (Borussia Dortmund), Alexander Pavlovich (Bayern Munich), Felix Nmecha (Borussia Dortmund), Leroy Sane (Bayern Munich), Angelo Stiller (Stuttgart), Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen), Deniz Undav (Stuttgart), Niclas Fullkrug (West Ham), Nick Woltemade (Stuttgart).
