Potter urges West Ham to 'lift the level' ahead of final game
West Ham want to end the season on a high, but so do Ipswich Town, who play their last top-flight game at Portman Road before relegation.
Graham Potter has challenged West Ham to find another level as they prepare for their final Premier League game of the season against Ipswich Town.
The Hammers travel to Portman Road on Sunday looking to record consecutive away wins, having beaten Manchester United 2-0 in their last game on the road.
However, that is their sole win in 10 after a 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest in their last home match of the season last weekend, with West Ham sitting 15th in the table with 40 points.
And Potter now wants to sign off on a high, but acknowledged West Ham need a big improvement if they want to do so.
"We have to do better. That's what it is. That's the challenge for us," Potter said.
"We have to lift the level because you can't sit around waiting for the margins to turn. You've got to make them turn. But that's fine. That's what we know.
"We feel like we've made the team more competitive [since he arrived], and every game we've been competitive.
"But nevertheless, the points tally, what we want to do, isn't as big as we'd like. Having said that, attack-wise, we've made some steps, but not enough."
Ipswich, meanwhile, dropped to 19th in the table after last weekend's 2-0 defeat away to Leicester City.
They have registered just one win since the turn of the year – a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth in early April – while their last home win came back on December 30 against Chelsea.
Ipswich had a lot of chances against Leicester, but failed to take them, and Kieran McKenna is hoping they have more luck in front of goal as they look to earn one last win before they return to the Championship.
"That [beating West Ham] has to be the focus over the next week," he told BBC Sport.
"We're really desperate to get a home win, and we'll have to work really hard this week to make sure we get that."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Ipswich Town – Julio Enciso
Ipswich had 20 shots in their defeat to Leicester City, their most in a Premier League game this season.
Julio Enciso was responsible for four of those and was one of just two players to get a shot on target (along with George Hirst). The Argentinian, who had 39 touches in that game, also created two chances.
West Ham – Jarrod Bowen
Jarrod Bowen has scored in three consecutive Premier League games for just the second time, after also doing so in April 2021.
Meanwhile, only Mohamed Salah (55%) has been involved in a greater proportion of his side's total Premier League goals this season than Bowen (44% - 19/43).
MATCH PREDICTION: WEST HAM WIN
West Ham have lost just one of their previous nine Premier League meetings with Ipswich Town (W4 D4), but have won their last three in a row, including a 4-1 victory in the reverse fixture.
Ipswich have never beaten West Ham at home in the Premier League. Their only former wins against them at Portman Road have both been in the Championship: 5-1 in January 2012 and 1-0 in May 2004.
West Ham have won just one of their last 10 top-flight matches (D4 L5), though that victory did come in their last away match as they beat Manchester United 2-0.
Ipswich have lost 13 of their 18 Premier League games in 2025 (W1 D4), already as many defeats as they suffered across their 40 league matches in the whole of 2024 (W15 D12 L13).
The Tractor Boys have lost each of their last eight Premier League games at Portman Road, their longest ever home losing run in any division, and have lost 13 home games in total this season, their joint-most in a single campaign (also 13 in 1994-95).
