Postecoglou tells Tottenham fans: Season three is better than season two
Tottenham won the Europa League on Wednesday, but could well finish 17th in the Premier League this season.
Ange Postecoglou has promised Tottenham supporters that next season will be better as he celebrated a Europa League triumph.
Brennan Johnson's scruffy goal in Bilbao on Wednesday was enough for Spurs to see off Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final.
Spurs have won their first trophy since 2008, while they will also participate in next season's Champions League.
Whether or not Postecoglou, who has been under pressure, will be in place to oversee them, remains to be seen.
Spurs head into their final-day clash with Brighton in 17th place in the Premier League, and the highest they can finish is 14th.
They have lost 21 league matches this season, but Postecoglou vowed next campaign will be better if he is in charge.
"I told them and they laughed. I told them and they didn't believe. And here we are," Postecoglou told the crowd during Spurs' trophy parade.
"I'll leave you with this: all the best television series, season three is better than season two."
Postecoglou invited scrutiny earlier in the campaign when he insisted he "always" wins trophies in his second season at a club.
Brighton, meanwhile, head into Sunday's match knowing a victory would ensure they finish eighth, which would be enough for them to possibly qualify for Europe.
One player who may not be involved in a European adventure for the Seagulls is Joao Pedro, who has been linked with a move away.
Joao Pedro was also left out of the Brighton squad for Monday's win over Liverpool, due to a training ground incident.
And the club's joint-leading scorer in the league will not feature against Spurs.
Fabian Hurzeler said: "With Joao, we had a small issue in training, a type which isn’t uncommon from time to time at all football clubs. We dealt with it internally and the matter is closed.
"Joao is an incredible football player, he is a match-winner for us and he is a great player and that’s why we invested in him.
"But there are principles, there are values that are non-negotiable that count for everyone. I don’t make any compromises."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Tottenham - Brennan Johnson
Johnson's effort against United was as scrappy as they get, and indeed, it could easily have gone down as a Luke Shaw own goal.
As it is, the winger etched his name in club folklore, and will be out to finish off the season on a high note in front of the Spurs fans.
Brighton - Kaoru Mitoma
Mitoma has scored three goals in his last four Premier League appearances, coming off the bench in each of those games.
He has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich this week, and if those reports prove to be true, this could be his final game for Brighton.
MATCH PREDICTION: BRIGHTON WIN
Spurs might have a European trophy under their belt, but they are nine places and 20 points worse off than Brighton.
Brighton came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in the reverse fixture against Tottenham in October – they have never won consecutive league games against Spurs before.
Only once have Spurs lost 22 games in a campaign, doing so in 1934-35 when they finished bottom of the top flight.
Should they lose this game, they will be the first side in top-flight history to lose 22 games in a 38-game season and not be relegated.
However, Tottenham have only lost their final league game in one of the last 14 seasons (W11 D2), winning the last four by an aggregate score of 16-3. Their only defeat in this run was at Newcastle United in 2015-16 (1-5).
