Postecoglou aiming to break 'negative connotations' surrounding Tottenham
Tottenham are looking to end their losing run and travel to a West Ham side also in need of a Premier League win on Sunday.
Ange Postecoglou wants to rewrite the "negative narrative" around Tottenham this season, with a trip to West Ham next up in the Premier League.
Spurs sit 16th in the league table on 37 points, and have endured a three-match losing run in the competition, which has seen the pressure pile on Postecoglou once more.
However, the bright spark in their season has been the Europa League, and they recorded a 3-1 win over Bodo/Glimt in the first leg of their semi-final on Thursday.
Postecoglou is hoping to put a positive spin on the mindset surrounding the club, among both fans and neutrals.
"I've said before, the narrative around the club is not positive at all," Postecoglou said.
"Whether you follow the club or not, there's always some sort of negative connotations to everything that happens at the club, but that's existed for a very long time - you need to break through that.
"[Winners] don't think about what could possibly go wrong. They have a real clarity around what they need to do to win, and I'm trying to create that with this group of players.
"If you expect something to go wrong, it will. So, you try to rail against that, but how you do that is just a clear-eyed focus on what's important."
West Ham sit one point and one place below Spurs in the table, with Graham Potter struggling to build any momentum since joining the club.
They are winless in their last seven matches in the Premier League, letting a 2-1 lead slip last time out against Brighton, conceding in the final minute to lose 3-2.
"We need points and wins," Potter said. "We've done some things right, but not enough.
"It's hard now to talk too positively, but we just need a front-footed performance that shows who we are.
"We know we're in a bad moment results-wise, but I think the players have been honest, disappointed and frustrated, which I think is good, and they realise we have to stick together."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
West Ham – Jarrod Bowen
Jarrod Bowen's two assists in the 3-2 loss at Brighton took him to 37 Premier League assists for West Ham, the outright most of any player and two clear of Mark Noble (35).
He was the first player with two assists in a defeat for the Hammers since Dimitri Payet in September 2016 against Watford.
Tottenham – James Maddison
James Maddison has provided two assists in his last three Premier League games, as many assists as in his previous 20 matches in the competition.
MATCH PREDICTION: WEST HAM WIN
West Ham are unbeaten in their last four Premier League home games against Spurs (W2 D2), their longest run since a run of six between 1995 and 2001.
However, since Potter's first Premier League game in charge of West Ham on January 14, only Southampton (14) have dropped more points from winning positions than the Hammers (12), who have failed to win any of the last four when they have gone ahead (D3 L1).
Spurs did win the reverse fixture 4-1 and are looking to complete the league double over West Ham for the first time since 2019-20.
Postecoglou's side have lost 19 Premier League matches this season, their joint most in a season along with 1993-94 and 2003-04. They last suffered more in a league season in 1991-92, when they lost 20.
Tottenham have lost their last four away league matches, their worst away losing run since six in a row between February and May 2019. They have shipped 4+ goals in their last two (2-4 vs Wolves, 1-5 vs Liverpool), last doing so in three away league games in a row in October-November 1976.
