Mourinho: I can relate to Amorim's Man Utd situation
Jose Mourinho said he understands what Ruben Amorim is going through, and Manchester United are right to give him more time.
Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has said he can relate to Ruben Amorim's situation at the club and thinks backing him is the right call.
United finished 15th in the Premier League, their lowest-ever position, and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham, missing out on Champions League qualification.
Overall, United suffered 20 defeats in all competitions this season, their most in a single campaign since losing 22 in 1973-74.
Mourinho was the last manager to guide the Red Devils to a European title, winning the Europa League in 2017, beating Ajax in the final.
The Portuguese coach, currently at Fenerbahce, said he went through a similar phase while at Porto, where he won the treble in his first full season before winning the Primeira Liga and Champions League in his second campaign.
"I've read some quotes from him [Amorim] saying that he is happy that he came and had already these six months," Mourinho told Sky Sports.
"When I went to Porto, the same happened to me. I went in January, I had a difficult six months.
"We were struggling even to qualify for UEFA Cup [Europa League] and then it happened, what happened.
"From what I read, the impact [of losing Europa League final] on Man United, of course, it is huge in the sense of how many years Man Utd is not involved in any European competition.
"But at the same time, it looks like they are supporting Ruben. They are giving him time and conditions to go forward."
