Manchester City 1-0 Wolves: De Bruyne pushes hosts towards Champions League
Manchester City took a big step towards a top-five Premier League finish on Friday, holding off in-form Wolves for a 1-0 win at the Etihad.
Kevin De Bruyne was the hero as Manchester City climbed to third in the Premier League table with a narrow 1-0 victory over Wolves, whose six-game winning run came to an end.
Playing in his penultimate home game before he leaves the club as a free agent, De Bruyne scored what could be his final goal at the Etihad Stadium in the 35th minute.
The 33-year-old side-footed past Jose Sa after running onto Jeremy Doku's cutback, moments after Andre had naively conceded possession for Wolves.
That goal came against the run of play as Vitor Pereira's revitalised visitors gave a good account of themselves, missing two glorious chances at 0-0.
Jean-Ricner Bellegarde overhit a simple pass to Marshall Munetsi, who was waiting for a tap-in, while Rayan Ait-Nouri hit the base of the post then saw his follow-up scrambled off the line by Josko Gvardiol.
Wolves hit the post for a second time after the interval, with Matheus Cunha almost catching Ederson out with a quickly taken effort from the edge of the area.
But Wolves' threat faded as the second half went on and they stay 13th in the table following their first defeat since February.
City, meanwhile, sit two points clear of Newcastle United, four ahead of Chelsea and Nottingham Forest and seven above Aston Villa, with their rivals in the race for Champions League qualification all in action between Saturday and Monday.
Data debrief: De Bruyne's farewell gift?
With only one home game – against Bournemouth on May 20 – to come before De Bruyne departs, City's fans may have witnessed the final sign-off from a true club legend.
De Bruyne has now scored 30 Premier League goals since turning 30 – the only players to score more for City when aged 30 or older are Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero (41 each).
And it should come as no surprise that he found the net against Wolves. He has registered 11 goal involvements in 10 Premier League appearances against them (six goals, five assists).
That is the joint-most any player has managed against Wolves in the Premier League, with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah possessing an identical record.
Friday's game was just the third in the Premier League this season to see only one English player named in the two starting lineups – City's Nico O'Reilly.
The other two occasions on which that has happened also featured Wolves, in their defeats to Liverpool and Fulham in February.
