Lammens unfazed by Man Utd pressure, Schmeichel comparisons
- Senne Lammens has impressed since replacing Altay Bayindir for Manchester United, but he is keen to keep proving himself for the club.
Senne Lammens was flattered by Manchester United fans' comparisons to Peter Schmeichel but noted he had a lot to prove before they could be in the same conversation.
The Belgian joined United from Royal Antwerp at the end of the transfer window and has made three appearances since then.
He kept a clean sheet on his debut against Sunderland – United's first shutout of the campaign – and has conceded just three goals from 14 shots on target faced, with a save percentage of 78.6%.
By comparison, Altay Bayindir, who played the first six games of the campaign, has a save percentage of 54.2%, having conceded 11 goals from 24 shots on target faced.
United had also been linked with World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez before sealing the deal for Lammens, who is relishing the pressure of being the club's number one.
And during his debut against Sunderland, Lammen's performance was greeted by chants of 'Are you Schmeichel in disguise?', though the 23-year-old did not hear them at the time.
"Of course, you hear from other people there is a lot of pressure coming here and playing for this team," Lammens told BBC Sport ahead of United's trip to Nottingham Forest.
"But I welcome that. Firstly, it is nice you can play for such a big team. There should be a lot of pressure – I'm not really scared of it.
"I don't listen to it [the chants] too much during the game, but I saw it afterwards.
"I'm not Schmeichel in disguise. I am just Senne Lammens, trying to help the team.
"It is an amazing compliment to get, but you have to be realistic. He is one of the best goalkeepers ever. I have to prove a lot more to be in the same conversation as him."
United are currently on a three-game winning streak in the Premier League, their best such run in one season since a run of four in February 2024.
In fact, since MD3, only Arsenal (16) have picked up more points than United (15 – W5 D2), who are the leading scorers in the top-flight in that time.
United's aim for the 2025-26 season is to achieve qualification for Europe, but Lammens has his eye on a longer-term goal.
"I want to have a long career here," he said.
"Then, maybe in the end, I can be in the conversation with people like Schmeichel, [Edwin] Van der Sar and [David] de Gea. That would be really nice."
