Howe calls for 'one more big effort' in Newcastle top-five push
Newcastle United have work to do to qualify for the Champions League as they host Everton on the final weekend of Premier League action.
Eddie Howe has called on his Newcastle United players to give "one more big effort" against Everton in order to seal Champions League football.
Newcastle lost 1-0 to Arsenal last week to leave their top-five hopes still in the balance heading into the final round of Premier League fixtures.
The Magpies are one of three teams on 66 points, alongside Chelsea and Aston Villa, with seventh-place Nottingham Forest on 65 points.
A home win for Newcastle against Everton would therefore guarantee Champions League football for the second time in three seasons.
"The prize is so big that everyone is fighting as much as they can," Howe said. "We've never got ahead of ourselves.
"Now, it’s going to go to the end, to the last game, and who knows? The twists and turns are there for everybody.
"All we can do is our best. They've given so much this year. Now, we know we need one more big effort in this last match."
While Newcastle have plenty to play for on the final weekend, Everton can finish no higher or lower than their current standing of 13th place.
Relegation has long been out of the question for the Toffees thanks to the impressive work of David Moyes since replacing Sean Dyche.
Everton last week played their final ever match at long-time home Goodison Park, beating Southampton 2-0, and Moyes is excited for the future.
"I wanted to make sure we finished [on a high]. We finish in a good enough fashion at home," Moyes said.
"I think there is the feeling that there might be a club which is coming back together.
"We're obviously all looking forward to it. If we can take what we had [against Southampton] to the new stadium, it'll be something."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Newcastle - Jacob Murphy
Alexander Isak remains a doubt for Newcastle, but in fellow attacker Murphy they have a player enjoying the form of his life.
Indeed, Murphy has 12 Premier League assists this term – only Andrew Cole in 1993-94 (13) and Nolberto Solano in 1999-00 (15) have assisted more in a campaign for United.
Everton - Iliman Ndiaye
Ndiaye will go down in history as the player who scored the final goal – or indeed goals – at Goodison Park after his brace against Southampton.
The Senegal international is averaging a goal every 141 minutes under Moyes, compared to one every 506 minutes under predecessor Dyche.
MATCH PREDICTION: NEWCASTLE WIN
Everton have collected 28 points since their first win under Moyes on 19 January, which only four other Premier League sides can better.
However, Everton have only won their final league game in one of the past eight seasons, beating Bournemouth 1-0 in 2022-23.
Newcastle, by comparison, have won their final Premier League game in eight of the past 10 seasons.
Howe's side have also won their last six home top-flight matches and are aiming to make it seven in a row for the first time since 2023.
Having lost six of their nine home league games against Everton between 2011 and 2019, Newcastle are now unbeaten in their last four.
