Brentford have plenty to play for despite top-eight blow, says Frank
Brentford are only given an 11.6% chance of making the top eight, which could mean European football, as they finish their season at Wolves.
Thomas Frank insists Brentford have plenty to play for against Wolves on the final day of the Premier League season, even though their European hopes are hanging by a thread.
Brentford lost a topsy-turvy West London Derby against Fulham 3-2 last Sunday, having led 2-1 in their final home outing of the season.
That result, coupled with Brighton's 3-2 victory over Liverpool on Monday, makes the Bees big outsiders to finish eighth, which could still be enough for Conference League football.
Brentford must win at Molineux on Sunday and hope Brighton lose at Tottenham.
They are given just an 11.6% chance of climbing into eighth, finishing ninth in 44.9% of the Opta supercomputer's final-day simulations. They finish 10th in 35.1% and 11th in 8.4%.
Brentford's record Premier League finish was ninth in 2022-23, and with both Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa on 19 goals for the campaign, there are also individual accolades to hunt.
"Everything is on. We will go into the last game. Even if we finish top 10 then it is an unbelievable performance from this club and this team," Frank said after the Fulham loss.
"We will do all we can to win at Wolves. You're too invested in it to stand and smile but inside you're burning. I hate losing.
"We can still finish eighth – that would be our highest in the Premier League. We have two players on 19 goals, there are so many positives."
Wolves, meanwhile, cannot climb any higher than 14th on the final day but will be keen to avoid dropping as low as 17th – they finish 14th in 57.8% of final-day simulations.
They were beaten 4-2 by FA Cup winners Crystal Palace on Tuesday, with a third consecutive defeat leaving Vitor Pereira furious.
"Of course, we need to show our best face. We had three months at a very good level, and we need to play at our level," he said.
"We are not a team that can relax. To compete here, to compete against teams like Brighton, like Crystal Palace, like Brentford, we need to be focused, be at our best level.
"We have to play with commitment, to play with the team spirit, not making mistakes, offering gifts for the opponent, and this is why I'm not happy.
"I hope to see my team. My team is a team with organisation, tactical maturity and team spirit and ambition."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Wolves – Jorgen Strand Larsen
Seven of Strand Larsen's 14 Premier League goals in his debut campaign for Wolves have come in his last eight appearances.
Indeed, since the start of March, the Norway international has been the most prolific player in the competition, ahead of Eberechi Eze and Wissa on six goals apiece.
Brentford – Bryan Mbeumo
Both Mbeumo and Wissa have 19 Premier League goals this season for Brentford, while both have found the net in the same game eight times in 2024-25.
Should they both score at Molineux, they would be the first duo to score 20 or more Premier League goals for the same team in a season since Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in 2018-19 for Liverpool (each scored 22).
With transfer speculation swirling, this could be Mbeumo's final outing for Brentford and he will be determined to go out on a high if that is the case.
MATCH PREDICTION – DRAW
Brentford have alternated between winning (three times) and losing (three times) their final league game in each of the last six seasons, going down 4-2 against Newcastle United last term.
They might feel they are due a win this time around, then, especially against a Wolves team that dreads the final matchday.
Wolves have lost their final league match in each of the last seven seasons by an aggregate score of 19-2, with that run starting in their Championship promotion campaign in 2017-18.
They last ended a campaign on a winning note under Paul Lambert in 2016-17, beating Preston North End 1-0.
They have also lost their last match in nine of their 10 campaigns as a Premier League side, with the exception being a 2-1 win over Sunderland in 2009-10.
Perhaps a high-scoring draw could be in the offing, however. Both Wolves' (F53 A68) and Brentford's (F65 A56) Premier League games have seen 121 goals scored this season – only Liverpool's (125) and Tottenham's (124) games have produced more.
OPTA WIN PROBABILITY
Wolves – 35.4%
Brentford – 39.9%
