Ahoka becomes Sunderland's third summer signing

Sunderland have confirmed the signing of midfielder Jules Ahoka from Royal Antwerp in a deal reportedly worth up to £8m. 

Ahoka has joined the Black Cats on a long-term contract and is Regis Le Bris' third addition of the summer, following Thomas Munier and Dayann Methalie. 

The 20-year-old joined Antwerp from AC Normands in his native DR Congo last September and put pen to paper on a four-year deal in Belgium. 

He has played in both of Antwerp's Jupiler Pro League matches so far this season, and was part of the DR Congo youth squad that finished fourth at this summer's prestigious Toulon Under-20s Tournament.

Sunderland director, Florent Ghisolfi, said: "Jules is a player we have been following closely, and he has shown some very encouraging qualities for his age.

"His performances at the Toulon Tournament demonstrated his physicality, defensive qualities and mentality, while he has also gained valuable experience in Belgium.

"He has huge potential, and we believe Sunderland is the right environment for him to continue his development.

"We are delighted to welcome him to the club and look forward to supporting him as he takes the next steps in his career."

Ahoka's arrival will provide competition in midfield for Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki and Habib Diarra, with Sunderland preparing for European football in 2026-27. 

His arrival could herald the departure of Alan Browne, who spent last season on loan in the Championship with Middlesbrough.

Sunderland began their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 defeat away to Ipswich Town, and they welcome Fulham to the Stadium of Light this Sunday.
