Toronto FC v Philadelphia Union: Carnell relishing busy stretch
The Philadelphia Union visit Toronto FC on Wednesday, for the eighth of nine games they will play in the month of May.
Bradley Carnell has enjoyed leading the Philadelphia Union through a remarkably busy period, as the Eastern Conference leaders prepare to visit Toronto FC on Wednesday.
Wednesday's game will be Philadelphia's penultimate outing in May, as they also go to FC Dallas on Saturday.
After those two matches, they will have played nine games in all competitions in May, and they have so far impressed, managing four wins and three draws in seven outings.
The Union were disappointed to draw 3-3 with Inter Miami on Saturday, conceding goals in the 87th and 95th minutes having led 3-1. It was the first time in club history they failed to win a regular-season match having led by two goals in the 85th minute or later.
But Carnell does not believe his players are looking fatigued, telling reporters: "I've enjoyed this process, I've experienced a lot of busy months, but I don't know if I've ever experienced one like this one.
"I won't again for quite some time, but I'm enjoying it. Every coach and every player, when you speak to them, all they want to do is play games.
"I think the way we're distributing the minutes, the way that we're rotating, that's kept the health within the group very good, so right now we can be competitive wherever we go."
Opponents Toronto are 14th in the Eastern Conference, though their recent results have shown an upturn, hammering CF Montreal 6-1 before losing 2-1 to Nashville SC on Saturday.
And Carnell has been impressed by the job first-year head coach Robin Fraser has done in Canada.
"It's about how he's approached working with that group of players and how he's starting to form and transition them into his game model," Carnell said of his opposite number.
"I would say they're one of the most transitional teams we're going to face, so we're going to have to be aware of that."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Toronto FC – Jonathan Osorio
Osorio scored Toronto's lone goal in their defeat to Nashville, his 54th in regular-season MLS play and second this season.
This is the 11th season in which Osorio has scored multiple goals and the fifth in a row, the longest streak of his career.
Philadelphia Union – Tai Baribo
Baribo, the leading scorer in MLS this year with 13 goals, netted twice against Miami last time out.
That was his first game with multiple goals since he netted five times in Philadelphia's first two matches of the campaign.
MATCH PREDICTION – PHILADELPHIA UNION WIN
Toronto have won eight of their last 11 home matches (excluding neutral-site matches) against Philadelphia in all competitions (D2 L1) dating back to 2015.
The Union's only win at Toronto in that time was a 2-1 victory in May 2019.
However, the Reds have only managed one win in their last 12 home matches in all competitions (D3 including a penalty shoot-out loss, L8) dating back to last September.
The Reds' five points through eight regular-season home matches in 2025 equals their fewest at this stage of a season (2012).
Philadelphia, meanwhile, have won their last two away matches, defeating CF Montreal and Atlanta United, so they enter Wednesday's game as favourites.
