Philadelphia Union 3-2 LA Galaxy: Baribo snatches last-gasp victory to pile misery on visitors
LA Galaxy had a 2-0 lead at half-time against Philadelphia Union, but failed to impose themselves in the second half at Subaru Park.
Tai Baribo completed a stunning second-half comeback for Philadelphia Union to snatch a 3-2 win over LA Galaxy, whose winless streak stretched to 13 games.
The Galaxy were in a strong position at half-time, but a collapse after the break saw their hopes of a first MLS win of the season drift away.
Quinn Sullivan saw an early free-kick on the left pushed away before Jakob Glesnes arrowed wide on the rebound, but Philadelphia struggled to build on their early dominance.
They were then punished in the 31st minute as Marco Reus led a counter-attack before laying it off to Mauricio Cuevas, who picked out the bottom-right corner with a pinpoint shot.
Reus then created their second just six minutes later, dummying a shot to tee up Diego Fagundez, who knocked it past Andrew Rick first time while one-on-one.
However, Philadelphia came out quickly in the second half; Jakob Glesnes was unmarked at the far post on a corner, and he nodded it down, with Nathan Harriel getting a deft touch with his knee to beat John McCarthy in the 48th minute.
Baribo netted the first of his brace just two minutes later as Danley Jean Jacques clipped a cross into the near post, and the forward snuck his header past the goalkeeper.
The Galaxy were not in the game after the break as Philadelphia saw great chances go begging, with Alejandro Bedoya and Baribo both unable to hit the target.
Their pressure eventually paid off in the 96th minute though, with Mikael Uhre chipping a great delivery to the far post, where Baribo was unmarked, and he powered a header past the stranded McCarthy.
Data Debrief: Galaxy make unwanted history
There were flashes of promise in the first half for Galaxy, who had moments where they looked back to their old selves, the team that won the MLS Cup last season.
However, after giving up their 2-0 lead to lose, they became the first team in MLS history to collect fewer than five points in their first 13 matches (three points).
They scored with both of their shots on target, and had just three shots overall, with Christian Ramirez heading over in the 90th minute in their only other attempt.
Baribo, meanwhile, now has 10 goals this season, and helped to end Philadelphia's six-match winless streak against the Galaxy (D2 L4).
