New England Revolution v Toronto FC: 'We haven't done enough this year', says Porter
Despite a poor second half to their MLS season, the New England Revolution are looking to end their campaign on a high against Toronto FC.
New England Revolution head coach Caleb Porter is determined to end their 2025 MLS season on a high after admitting they had underachieved this year.
The Revolution sit 11th in the Eastern Conference, 11 points adrift of the playoff places with just five games of their regular season remaining.
Porter's side have won just two league matches since June 14, losing 10 of their 14 fixtures in that time, seeing them fall out of contention for a spot in the postseason.
Despite their poor form, the New England boss wants to deliver a positive performance this weekend, when they welcome Toronto FC to Gillette Stadium.
"My mindset is simple – I'm going to keep moving this club forward," said Porter. "That means, in the short term win the next game at home. We have three home games left.
"For me those home games are very important, getting results in all three, starting with Toronto.
"Leaving our fans with a good feeling. We haven't done that this year enough. So that's short term. Win the next game.
"And then long term, keep building for the future with the players that are going to be here."
Porter also confirmed that 18-year-old midfielder Allan Oyirwoth will be making his first MLS start against Toronto.
Oyirwoth played 20 minutes off the bench in their 3-2 defeat to the Chicago Fire last time out, and is now relishing his opportunity to make an impact from the start.
"To me, as a kid, it's really unbelievable," Oyirwoth said. "I've worked hard for it. I've been working in training.
"The 20 minutes they gave me in the last game [at Chicago], I really tried my best.
"I went and watched the [highlights] and I think I did my best and did really well. So, giving me the opportunity to start in a match, in a MLS game, that's really something unbelievable to me and I appreciate it a lot.
"I think I have to work hard in that game, so I can continue getting more minutes."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
New England Revolution – Carles Gil
Carles Gil has been prolific for New England this season, scoring 10 goals and providing just as many assists in 29 MLS games.
Gil scored New England's second goal against Chicago from the penalty spot, his 17th converted spot-kick in the regular season for the Revolution, equalling Lee Nguyen for the most in club history.
Toronto FC – Djordje Mihailovic
Following his move to Toronto from the Colorado Rapids at the start of August, Djordje Mihailovic has provided two assists in four matches for his side.
In total this season, he has directly contributed to 18 goals (nine goals, nine assists) in 28 MLS games.
MATCH PREDICTION – NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION WIN
New England defeated Toronto 2-0 at BMO Field on May 3 after losing both meetings with the Reds in 2024. The Revs are trying to defeat Toronto twice in a single season for just the second time since 2016, also achieving the feat in 2023.
However, the Revolution's defeat to Chicago was their 10th loss in their last 14 regular-season matches (W2 D2). This is the second-straight season New England have had a span of 10 losses in 14 games after not doing so previously since 2002.
Toronto have drawn four consecutive regular-season matches for the third time in club history and the first since 2023. The Reds are winless in six straight with their only victory since the beginning of July coming against San Diego FC.
