New England Revolution v Minnesota United: Mitrovic insists hosts are better than Nashville loss
New England Revolution and Minnesota United are both looking to bounce back from midweek defeats when they clash on Saturday in MLS.
New England Revolution head coach Marko Mitrovic insists the team know they are better than their defeat to Nashville SC ahead of hosting Minnesota United in MLS.
Wednesday's matchday was the highest-scoring in the competition's history, but it was a day in which New England failed to hit the net in a 3-0 defeat to the Eastern Conference leaders.
It is a loss that snapped a seven-game unbeaten streak for the Revs (W6 D1) and marked just the second time they have failed to hit the back of the net this term (also a 1-0 loss to New York Red Bulls).
The Revs have dropped to third in the East, and Mitrovic says the Nashville result shows how much work they still have to do despite a strong start to the season.
"When we played the [season opener], I felt like [Nashville] are in that moment, really a level above us, maybe even two," Mitrovic said.
"And it's a long way to go for us. In the first 30 minutes, I felt much more positive comparing with Nashville.
"Now, it's how we can sustain that through the whole game and get to that level?
"I see disappointment in the locker room, but sometimes that disappointment can go in two ways - how are you going to recover and how you're going to take it? You know we are better than this."
Minnesota were another team that failed to hit the back of the net on Wednesday as they were beaten 1-0 by the Colorado Rapids.
They now sit sixth in the West, already eight points behind leaders Vancouver Whitecaps, having played a game more.
And in the two games left before the World Cup break, Minnesota will be without James Rodriguez. The club announced prior to the Rapids loss that they were releasing him to Colombia ahead of the tournament.
James started against Colorado and created three chances before being substituted after 63 minutes.
"The club is proud to support James as he represents his country on the world's biggest stage and wishes him success during camp and throughout the tournament," Minnesota said in a statement.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
New England Revolution – Luca Langoni
Only six players more assists in MLS this season than Luca Langoni (six), though he remains a doubt for this game after missing the midweek loss to Nashville.
His tally comes from 1.3 expected assists (xA), an overperformance of 4.7, while he has created just 13 chances in total.
Minnesota United – Jefferson Diaz
Though Minnesota lost to the Colorado Rapids last time out, Jefferson Diaz was a bright spark all over the pitch, having the most shots (three), touches (98) and playing the most accurate passes (52/66).
He also won 10 of his 14 duels (both team-high totals), while only Owen Gene (eight) won possession more often than Diaz (six).
MATCH PREDICTION: NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION WIN
New England have lost just one of their previous five matches against Minnesota in MLS (W3 D1), with that lone defeat coming away from home in July 2018.
The Revs are unbeaten in their last three meetings with Minnesota (W2 D1), while at home, they have won all three clashes, scoring nine goals in the process.
New England have been hard to beat at Gillette Stadium this season, winning six of their seven games (L1), though that sole loss came against Nashville on Wednesday (3-0).
After failing to win any of their first three MLS road games in 2026 (D1 L2), Minnesota have since won each of their last four, including a 3-2 win over Eastern Conference opposition in Columbus Crew in their last such game.
OPTA WIN PROBABILITY
New England – 47.2%
Draw – 24.5%
Minnesota United – 28.3%
