New England Revolution v Chicago Fire: Berhalter only focused on 'strong' finish, not playoffs
Chicago Fire could seal an automatic playoff spot this weekend, but they need a win over New England and other results to go their way.
Chicago Fire's place in the MLS playoffs is already confirmed, but a "strong" finish to the regular season against New England Revolution could change their postseason.
Chicago will be featuring in the playoffs for the first time since 2017, and currently sit eighth in the Eastern Conference, just one point behind Orlando City in the final automatic spot.
The Fire are on a four-match winning streak in MLS, and another victory on Saturday could see them push much higher up the table, if other results go their way.
Head coach Gregg Berhalter is not looking past this weekend, though, noting that his only aim is to make sure confidence is high with a strong finish.
"We're not game-planning for a potential Wednesday or Saturday," Berhalter said. "Our focus is just on the game at Foxborough.
"And, you know, we want to finish the season strong. We want to win the game, put ourselves in a good position, and we'll see from there.
"And then, you know, when we get to the playoffs, we'll do the same thing, and we'll be ready to compete."
New England, meanwhile, will be playing their final game in 2025, having failed to reach the playoffs.
They sit 11th in the East on 35 points, 16 points behind Columbus Crew in ninth after winning just one of their last six games (D1 L4), though that did come in their last home outing.
The Revs suffered a 4-1 defeat to Inter Miami in their last match, but interim head coach Pablo Moreira was impressed by Dor Turgeman's performance and hopes he can build on that.
"It's two games and two goals, so the guy gets goals," Moreira said of Turgeman, as quoted by the Blazing Musket substack.
"He was a bright spot on the day. You just see what he does in tight spaces, and he makes you pay. He's a lethal player, and we've seen that over the last two games.
"We're really happy with his performance, and we just want him to keep going."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
New England Revolution – Carles Gill
Carles Gil leads New England with 10 goals this season, his third consecutive season with 10+ goals.
He joins Taylor Twellman (five) as the only New England players to record three or more seasons with 10+ goals in club history.
Chicago Fire – Philip Zinckernagel
Philip Zinckernagel delivered a pair of assists in Chicago's last match to bring his regular-season total to 15 assists, the most in a single season for a Fire player.
He is one of three MLS players (Lionel Messi, Anders Dreyer) this season with at least 15 assists.
MATCH PREDICTION: CHICAGO FIRE WIN
The Chicago Fire snapped a 12-game winless streak in league play against New England that dated back to 2019, earning a 3-2 win last month.
Chicago last won consecutive regular-season matches over the Revs during a four-match winning streak in 2016 and 2017.
Chicago have also scored a league-best 41 road goals in 2025, the second-most road goals scored in a season by any MLS team. The only team with more road goals in an MLS season was the LA Galaxy in 1998.
The Revolution earned a 2-0 win over Atlanta United in their most recent home match and are looking to pick up consecutive home wins for the first time since March-April. New England have not had consecutive home shutout wins across all competitions since doing so in March 2023.
