Tunisia have sacked head coach Sabri Lamouchi and replaced him with Herve Renard after losing 5-1 to Sweden in their opening game at the World Cup, having U-turned on a plan to make Mondher Kebaier their interim boss.

Lamouchi oversaw a dismal start to Tunisia's Group F campaign on Sunday, as Yasin Ayari netted twice and was joined on the scoresheet by Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres and Mattias Svanberg for Sweden.

Tunisia have now won just three of their last 19 World Cup matches (15.8%), with only Bulgaria (11.5%) having a lower win percentage having played 15+ games at the tournament.

Lamouchi is the first manager to ever be sacked one game into a World Cup campaign, having only been appointed in January following Sami Trabelsi's departure.  

The Tunisian Football Federation initially said plans were underway to appoint Kebaier ahead of Saturday's showdown with Japan. 

However, in a surprise move, it was announced on Tuesday that Renard would take the reins until the end of the tournament, with the potential for his contract to then be extended. 

"The Tunisian Football Federation announces the appointment of Herve Renard as the coach of the national team until the end of the 2026 World Cup, to carry out his duties starting this evening," the FTF confirmed on Instagram.

"The agreement also states to open negotiations after the end of participation in the World Cup, for long-term cooperation based on specific sporting goals."

Renard previously managed Saudi Arabia at the 2022 World Cup, masterminding a memorable win over eventual champions Argentina in their opening game.

He was unable to lead them to the knockout stages, though, as defeats to Poland and Mexico ensured they finished bottom of their group.

Renard also led France at the 2023 Women's World Cup, losing in the quarter-finals, before returning to Saudi Arabia for a second spell at the helm and leading them to qualification for this year's World Cup.

He has previously won the Africa Cup of Nations with both Zambia (in 2012) and Ivory Coast (2015), while also having stints in charge of Lille and Morocco.

Renard will be the seventh head coach to lead Tunisia since the start of 2024, with Jalel Kadri their last boss to reach 20 games at the helm (27 from January 2022 to January 2024).
