Union Berlin 0-3 Borussia Dortmund: Kovac's side close gap on Bundesliga leaders Bayern
After Bayern Munich slipped up earlier on Saturday, Borussia Dortmund took full advantage to close the gap on the Bundesliga leaders.
Borussia Dortmund narrowed their deficit to Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich with a routine 3-0 victory over Union Berlin.
Goals from Emre Can, Nico Schlotterbeck and Maximilian Beier moved Niko Kovac's side within eight points of Bayern, who suffered their first league defeat of the season against Augsburg earlier on Saturday.
Dortmund broke the deadlock after 10 minutes at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei. Can calmly swept home from the penalty spot, after Serhou Guirassy was brought down by goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow.
The hosts sought a response, with Andrej Ilic heading a decent opportunity wide from close range, while Fabio Silva drilled narrowly wide of the post at the other end.
Kovac's side gave themselves breathing space nine minutes into the second half. Julian Ryerson's deep corner was met by Schlotterbeck, with Ronnow only able to help his fierce header into the roof of the net.
Guirassy squandered a great chance when he volleyed over from inside the six-yard box. However, Dortmund got their third goal to seal victory six minutes from time as Jobe Bellingham found Beier, who drilled across Ronnow and into the far corner.
Data Debrief: Can on the spot once again
Can maintained his perfect record from the penalty spot in the Bundesliga. That is now 12 from 12 in the German top flight, with only Harry Kane (20), Hans-Joachim Abel (16), Ludwig Nolden (15) enjoying longer successful streaks without failure.
Meanwhile, that was the fourth penalty goal Union have conceded this season, with only Stuttgart (five) letting in more in the Bundesliga.
Dortmund have now won six of their last seven league meetings with Union, who suffered only their second defeat in eight home league games. They produced 1.24 expected goals (xG) from 10 shots to Dortmund's 1.89 from 15 attempts.
