Leverkusen's season not a write-off despite missing out on top four, says Andrich
Bayer Leverkusen did not mount a late charge into the Champions League places, but Robert Andrich is still proud of their 2025-26 campaign.
Bayer Leverkusen captain Robert Andrich says it would be "wrong to write off the whole season" despite disappointment over missing out on the Champions League.
Leverkusen were three points off the top four heading into their final Bundesliga match of the season against Hamburg, knowing they needed a win to book their place in UEFA's premier club competition.
However, they were left to rue a missed Patrik Schick penalty in the first half, as they came from behind to draw 1-1 with Hamburg, ensuring they finished sixth and secured Europa League qualification.
Leverkusen underwent a season of change, with Kasper Hjulmand taking over after Erik ten Hag was dismissed after just three games of his tenure.
And though Andrich admitted there were some frustrations, he does not believe it was a poor season overall.
"The number of points [59] is quite decent, but in the end, it wasn't enough for the Champions League, so we mainly feel disappointed right now," Andrich told Werkself TV.
"But it would be wrong to write off the whole season – we had many matches where we were able to delight and entertain the fans.
"In the end, there were just too many small details that make the difference at this very high level."
In the three-points-per-win era, only one team has ever managed to make up a three-point deficit to fourth place with just one matchday remaining – Borussia Dortmund in 1998-99.
Leverkusen certainly had their chances to become the second to do so, accumulating 3.3 expected goals (xG) from their 26 shots, nine of which were on target, but they just could not make it count.
"In the end, it wasn't enough for our big goal," Mark Flekken added.
"We had a difficult start. The squad with so many new players had to find its rhythm first. Towards the winter, we had a very good run with great displays and results.
"We were too weak after the winter break and unnecessarily dropped some points in the final spurt."
