Borussia Dortmund 3-0 Holstein Kiel: Kovac's men reach Champions League with routine win
Serhou Guirassy, Felix Nmecha and Marcel Sabitzer scored as Borussia Dortmund snatched fourth on the final day of the Bundesliga season.
Borussia Dortmund hammered relegated Holstein Kiel 3-0 on Saturday to finish fourth and snatch the Bundesliga's final Champions League spot for next season.
Dortmund entered the final matchday knowing a three-goal victory over their 2.Bundesliga-bound visitors would seal Champions League qualification.
Ahead of Saturday's game, the Opta supercomputer gave them an 83.1% chance of finishing fourth, and a 16.6% likelihood of staying in fifth and failing to qualify.
And there was to be no slip-up at the Westfalenstadion, with Dortmund making a dream start when Serhou Guirassy converted a third-minute penalty to give them the lead.
Kiel were then left with 10 players when Carl Johansson was sent off, receiving a straight red card for an ill-advised lunge on Karim Adeyemi.
The hosts could not make the extra man count until the break, leading to a few nerves among the home fans, but two minutes after the restart, Marcel Sabitzer slotted home from the edge of the box.
Felix Nmecha then added a third for Dortmund in the 72nd minute, though the margin of their victory was ultimately irrelevant as they finished two points clear of fifth-placed Freiburg.
Freiburg were facing Eintracht Frankfurt in a winner-take-all clash at the Europa-Park Stadion, and though Ritsu Doan gave them a half-time lead, things unravelled afterwards.
Ansgar Knauff levelled on the stroke of half-time, then Rasmus Kristensen and Ellyes Skhiri scored in the second half to seal Eintracht's win, and a third-placed finish.
Data debrief: Dortmund fightback complete, Eintracht back in the big time
Niko Kovac has overseen a terrific recovery for Dortmund, who at one point in 2024-25 looked set to finish in mid-table.
Dortmund are only the second club in the Bundesliga's three-points-for-a-win era to make up 10 points to fourth place in the second half of a season, after Bayer Leverkusen in 2018-19.
They will be joined in the Champions League by Eintracht, who have finished in the top four of the Bundesliga for the first time in 32 years, last doing so when they were third in 1992-93.
