Wenger: European Super League Will Destroy EPL
A breakaway European Super League would spell disaster for the English top-flight, says the former Arsenal boss
Arsene Wenger criticized the idea of a new European Super League in an interview with SNTV last Friday, accusing club owners and investors of solely thinking in monetary terms.
The subject of Europe's biggest clubs breaking away from their respective domestic leagues to form a new competition was reignited on Tuesday when outgoing Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu announced that the Catalan giants had accepted an invitation to join a proposed new European Super League.
The spectre of a breakaway European Super League would be ruinous for the Premier League, believes Wenger.
"What are investors' first target? It's to make more money and so that the European Super League is one way maybe to make more money," said the former Arsenal coach.
"The other leagues tried to destroy the advantage the Premier League has. For them, the best thing to attain that is to create a European league. So that means to destroy the Premier League, basically," added Wenger.
