Middlesbrough needed a penalty shoot-out to send Manchester United crashing out of the Capital One Cup.

Manchester United crashed out of the League Cup following a 0-0 draw and a 3-1 penalty shoot-out defeat against Middlesbrough on Wednesday.
Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick and Ashley Young missed penalties for the Red Devils while only David Nugent missed for Middlesbrough, sending the Championship side through to the next round after a stalemate in normal time.
The match went to penalties folowing a stalemate that stretched into extra-time, with neither side managing to break the deadlock and score.
The game was even throughout with both Van Gaal's side and Championship Middlesbrough having chances to pull ahead, though the hosts had two shouts for a penalty turned down, as referee Lee Mason deemed Daniel Ayala to have not handled the ball.
