Valparaiso: UNESCO World Heritage Site Gets World Class Football
Valparaiso: Cultural capital of Chile gets world-class football
A city of great tradition and unparalleled beauty, with a stadium named after one of the most important and influential players in Chile's history.
Valparaíso is now known as Chile’s cultural capital after the city’s historic quarter was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2003.
STADIUM
Valparaíso’s Estadio Elías Figueroa was re-named in honour of the renowned former Chile international defender who represented his country from 1966 to 1982 and featured in three World Cups.
Originally built in 1931 before being renovated for the Copa América, the ground is the home venue for Santiago Wanderers, the club where Figueroa’s illustrious career began.
Formerly known as Estadio Valparaíso and Estadio Regional Chiledeportes, the ground was not used during the 1962 World Cup in Chile.
