Mexican Under-20 GK Jesse Gonzalez Accepts U.S. National Team Call-Up
FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez has accepted a call-up from the U.S. national team for its January training camp, sources have confirmed to Goal USA.
OMNISPORT
FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez enjoyed a breakout season in MLS, and now he appears ready to reap the rewards for that success in the form of a national team call-up.
What may be a surprise is just which national team he will be joining soon.
Gonzalez has accepted a call-up to the U.S. national team's January training camp, sources have confirmed to Goal USA. The 20-year-old North Carolina native spent his formative years living in Texas and playing for the Mexican youth national team setup, but his excellent play for FC Dallas in the second half of the 2015 season turned heads and attracted the attention of Jurgen Klinsmann, who could be ready to pry the prospect away from 'El Tri'.
The U.S. is playing a pair of friendlies after the January camp, against Iceland and Canada, which could give Gonzalez his first taste of senior international soccer. Since the matches are friendlies, Gonzalez would not be cap-tied by playing for the U.S in those matches.
If Gonzalez does decide to stick with the U.S, he could be in the running for a starting role on the U.S. Under-23 national team as it prepares for an Olympic qualifying playoff against Colombia in October. The January U.S. camp is expected to include several players who are eligible for the Under-23 team.
A product of the FC Dallas youth academy, Gonzalez started the final 11 matches of the regular season for FC Dallas, as well as all four matches in the playoffs. The 6-foot-4 shot stopper was a member of Mexico's Under-20 World Cup team last summer, starting two of the team's three matches.
