La Serena: Old Becomes New Again
La Serena: Old becomes new again with revamped venue
Chile's second oldest city now boasts a stadium which will provide a first-class sports complex for the Copa América this summer
The second oldest city in Chile, La Serena was founded in 1544 and is located almost 500km north of the capital Santiago.
STADIUM
Estadio La Portada is named after the spectacular stone archway off the coast of Chile which marked the way to La Serena for travellers in colonial times.
Built in 1952, La Portada hosted several games of the pre-Olympic tournament of 2004 with Argentina’s star duo of Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez and Peru’s Paolo Guerrero among the players to feature.
The stadium has been completely renovated ahead of the 2015 Copa América and the forthcoming Under-17 World Cup.
