Saint-Etienne Confirm Deal Struck to Sell Fofana to Leicester
Wesley Fofana will leave Les Verts to join Leicester City in a club record deal for the Ligue 1 club
Saint-Etienne have confirmed that a deal has been agreed to sell teenage center-back Wesley Fofana to Leicester City
The 19-year-old will reportedly join the Premier League outfit on initial fee of €35 million (£32m/$41m), plus a further €5m in performance-related bonuses.
Club statement:
"AS Saint-Étienne reached an agreement on Tuesday evening with the club Leicester, the current leaders of the English Premier League, for the transfer of their defender Wesley Fofana. The amount of this transfer is the largest ever obtained by the club.
"The decision to sell the player was taken collegially by the Management Board and the shareholders. ASSE accepted Leicester’s exceptional offer, particularly given the uncertain economic environment caused by the health crisis. In addition, even if it presented, for the 2019-2020 financial year and for the tenth consecutive year, a positive financial result, the club sees for the moment its room for maneuver considerably reduced by the consequent commitments made in as part of his previous sports project, in 2018, 2019 and until the beginning of summer 2020.
"Trained at the club and winner of the 2019 Gambardella Cup, Wesley Fofana made his mark last season, under the leadership of Claude Puel. It is indeed with the General Manager of ASSE, appointed head of the Greens in October 2019, that he has made spectacular progress, thus establishing himself at the highest level. Last season, Wesley Fofana made 14 appearances in the Ligue 1 Uber Eats, 6 in the Coupe de France, including the final against PSG, 2 in the Coupe de la Ligue and 2 in the UEFA Europa League. At just 19, he is now considered one of the greatest French talents of his generation."
