The Miami Marlins have confirmed the death of star pitcher Jose Fernandez, following a boating accident.
Reports emerged on Sunday claiming Fernandez, 24, had been among three people killed in an incident in the early hours of the morning.
His death was subsequently confirmed by the Marlins, whose Sunday fixture against the Atlanta Braves has been cancelled.
"The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez," the team said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time."
Fernandez was considered one the leading pitchers in baseball and had the promise of a great career ahead of him.
He was the Marlins' first-round draft pick in 2011, Rookie of the Year in 2013 and an All-Star in 2013 and 2016.
