Spurs welcome Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund to Wembley in one the standout round of sixteen ties of the Champions League. Both sides have impressed this season with their unique brand of free-flowing, high tempo and it will be interesting to see which team will gain the upper hand heading into the second leg. As ever, you will be able to follow all the action Live & Exclusive with beIN SPORTS.
Could Tottenham be the dark horses of the Premier League title race? For now, the North London side are currently in third place and just five points away from league leaders Manchester City. Despite being without key players in Harry Kane & Dele Alli, Spurs have kept winning and are playing themselves into contention. The question is does the Champions League prove to be a distraction to Tottenham’s title aspirations?
For now, Spurs have been able to grind out results against the odds and will be quietly confident of getting something against a Dortmund side who has slipped up domestically in recent weeks.
The timely return of South Korean attacker Son Heung-min from the Asian Cup has been a huge boost for Tottenham and could prove to be the difference maker for the visit of Dortmund. Son scored for the third consecutive game at the weekend, a magnificent breakaway goal to confirm all three points in a 3-1 win over Leicester.
The 26-year old is set to lead the line on Wednesday and is no stranger to facing Dortmund having played in the Bundesliga for Bayer Leverkusen. Providing Son can get the service from the likes of Harry Winks & Christian Eriksen, expect him to continue his goal scoring feats midweek.
Tottenham Predicted Team.
Lloris, Vertongen, Sanchez. Alderweireld, Rose, Trippier, Winks, Dier, Eriksen, Moura, Son
As for Dortmund, they have suffered a wobble of three consecutive draws, one of which saw them dumped out of the German Cup on penalties at the hands of Werder Breman. With Bayern returning to form, the Bavarians have now cut down the lead at the top of the table to just five points.
Last time out Dortmund threw away a three-goal lead, conceding two late goals to end up drawing 3-3 against Hoffenheim. Lucien Favre will be disappointed that they failed to hold onto the lead, especially at home. The match against Spurs will be the ideal tonic for this young side who will be looking to return to winning ways.
One injury doubt for Dortmund is attacker Marco Reus, who picked up a thigh injury in the defeat to Breman in the Cup. Reus has enjoyed an impressive season and with a record of 17 goals and 11 assists in 27 appearances would suggest his absence will be a major blow for the Germans.
Despite being without Reus, Dortmund will look to England youngster Jadon Sancho for inspiration on Wednesday evening. The winger has been one of the stand out players in the squad and has seven goals to his name so far this season. The searing pace of Sancho will be a key asset for the Bundesliga leaders as they look to soak up pressure and counter on the break.
